Emotional dysregulation

Experiencing intense emotions can feel frightening and difficult to manage.

You may find that emotions quickly become overwhelming, leaving you feeling emotionally flooded, reactive or unable to calm yourself once distressed.

At times, even what may seem like small situations may trigger intense emotional reactions, leaving you feeling confused and making coping feel increasingly difficult.

Many people I work with describe:

~emotions feeling "too much"

~struggling to calm down once upset

~emotional highs and lows or mood swings

~feeling emotionally sensitive or reactive

~becoming overwhelmed easily

~feeling emotionally drained or exhausted

~difficulties coping with conflict or perceived rejection

~feeling like other people "don't get them"

Understanding emotional dysregulation:

First of all, there is nothing "wrong with you". Often intense emotional responses develop from earlier experiences or environments that were emotionally invalidating in some way.

Overtime the nervous system can become highly sensitive to stress, rejection, conflict or emotional pain, making emotions feel difficult to regulate or contain.

How therapy can help:

Therapy offers a safe and supportive space where you can begin to explore your emotions and what might be making you more vulnerable to intense reactions, in a safe space without fear of judgement.

We can look at building a toolbox of distress tolerance tools that help you to get through intense emotional situations without doing anything that might unintentionally make the situation worse and we can look at strategies to leave you feeling calmer, more grounded and in control emotionally.

If you would like to explore if therapy might feel right for you, then please let me know.
